keel /kiːl/ noun

  1. The structural backbone that runs along the bottom of a ship, from bow to stern. It is laid first, and the whole hull is built on it.
  2. The fin below the waterline that keeps a vessel upright in a crosswind and turns that sideways push into forward motion.

Below the waterline, the keel resists the push and keeps the ship upright, so the same wind that could knock it over drives it forward instead.
